Churches in Paderborn –the Basilica and the former Jesuit Church

While the group stopped for some refreshments, John and I took a walk around the plaza and looked in on some of the old churches here–the Basilica  built in the 1150s and the former Jesuit Church, where they were preparing for a wedding this afternoon.

The Basilica was simple and beautiful.

The chalk dates on the door show the visit of the 3 Wise Men’s visits on Epiphany each year.

This was the Jesuit Church.  Prince-Bishop Ferdinand von Fürstenberg had the basilica built from 1682 as a university church for the Jesuits. Lay-brother Anton Hülsen later provided the designs for the Baroque building. The large Jesuit college is located next to the church.

This golden altar piece was spectacular and the colors in the church were soft and feminine.

After we were reunited to watch the end of the marching parades, Volker led us on a walk though parts of the new town.  We popped into the Tourist information office, a typical department store, and wandered through the outdoor pedestrian walking mall.

We saw the Adam and Eve House, built in the 1500s–the oldest and best-preserved half-timbered house in the city with lots of interesting carvings on the outside of the story of Adam & Eve.
