After visiting Gelnhausen, we continued along the Fairy Tale Route to Steinau to see the castle there. It was also closed when we last visited during the winter. This is the town where the Grimm family lived from 1791 to 1796. This castle was in their neighborhood, in the heart of Steinau. Maybe it helped to inspire some of the visuals for the fairy tales they collected.

The castle was occupied for many years, certainly during the time the Grimm family lived here. I wonder if the village children looked down over the walls to watch the royals playing here.

There were 2 parts of the castle to visit. The main part featured the Grimm Brothers and their family. The other part had some history of the castle itself.

These are the rooms with information and displays about the Grimms.

Here is the Grimm family tree:

This Martin Luther Bible belonged to the Grimm family:

The Grimm Brothers spent many years compiling a dictionary:

Jacob Grimm’s inkwell:

This is the famous face the Grimm Brothers loved and used as a prototype in many of their tails. She’s called “the Fairytale Woman.”

There are some interactive activities for kids here in the castle:

For an extra small fee, you can climb up the tower to see the views of the town.

You can spend an hour or more in the castle. It’s interesting. The Grimm family home also has a museum that is excellent that we visited last time. You can read about that here.
