We went out for a walk this evening during a break in some rain storms. We live in a part of Frankfurt called Eckenheim. Eckenheim is called a quiet village in the city. We live where the blue down shows below.

According to historians, the village of Eckenheim was first mentioned in 795. when it was a royal hunting ground. During the Middle Ages, Ekinheim, as Eckenheim was then called, was then a bone of contention between the cities of Hanau and Frankfurt. Although Eckenheim belonged to Frankfurt, the Hanauers were in charge. Then during the Reformation a new age began and Eckenheim was part of Frankfurt, but in the Napoleonic era it was moved back to the Electorate of Hanau. It wasn’t until 1910 that the back and forth came to an end, and Eckenheim was finally incorporated and attached to Frankfurt. At that time, the village got gas lighting for the streets, and later electric lighting, and the village was connected to the sewer system. Villagers could also take the tram to Frankfurt.

The streets are quiet here, and clean and tidy. People take care to beautify the entrances to their homes.

We passed by the two old churches, one Catholic (built 1896-1899)and one Evangelical (built in 1863).

Along the main street we saw some beautiful old half timber homes and these colorful ones. Each home is unique. There are also many apartment buildings in our neighborhood, many built after WWII for displaced persons.

Here’s one of the local grocery stores it will be easy to walk to.

And next door is Rossmann, a drugstore similar to Walgreens at home.

We had dinner tonight at this little local shop serving Mediterranean food. It was really quite good!

We will enjoy exploring this area when we go out for walks.
